It was typical that, having bemoaned
the lack of new releases, the large Time Life DVD collection appeared whilst
the previous magazine was in the process of being printed. We did manage to
include a “Stop Press” item which hopefully alerted you all to what has unfortunately
turned out to be a costly and rather controversial set. I wonder if we really should
have kept quiet because the advertising was somewhat misleading in view of the
severe editing of many of the shows. Richard Baker reviews it for us in Keeping Track. A pleasant surprise for
us though is the release of “Holiday in Europe” by Sepia Records. I only became
aware of this CD in the later stages of its development but I was able to
suggest that one of the rehearsal tracks recorded in the UK in 1960 be
included.
Gary Giddins’
excellent new book is now available and Ken Crossland discusses it in his
Crosbyana section. It’s a book you just can’t put down and anyone interested in
Bing should read it. Also, Howard Crosby and Bob Ferguson have put together a
very interesting article about Bing and the family, Ron McBride shares some
rare photos from the Edsel show and all the regular contributors are here too including
Jeremy Rose who examines “A Little Bit of Irish”. David Lobosco remembers the
film of Pennies from Heaven.
Increasingly I
am sending regular emails to members, particularly if there are any time
sensitive matters. If you are not receiving emails from me and would like to be
added to my mailing list, please let me know. I try not to bother members too
often.
A notice about
next year’s subscriptions / dues is enclosed with this magazine. Please send
off your payment as soon as possible to spare the club the cost and effort of
sending out many chaser letters.
Copy date for the spring issue is March 1st.
I wish you all
